To my left is a little metal hut with some pipes and valves and behind that is a bridge that carried the cargo inside these pipes over the main road here. Cant Imagine how toxic this land really is.

Hazards of Depleted Uranium Contamination Training Video; Between October and December 1995, the US Army's Depleted Uranium (DU) Project completed a series of training videos and manuals about depleted uranium munitions. This training regimen was developed as the result of recommendations made in the January 1993 General Accounting Office (GAO) report, Army Not Adequately Prepared to Deal with Depleted Uranium Contamination. The training materials were intended to instruct servicemen and women about the use and hazards of depleted uranium munitions. In addition, the training regimen included instructions for soldiers who repair and recover vehicles contaminated by depleted uranium. Metallic uranium (U) is a silver-white, lustrous, dense, weakly radioactive element. It is ubiquitous throughout the natural environment, and is found in varying but small amounts in rocks, soils, water, air, plants, animals and in all human beings. Natural uranium consists of a mixture of three radioactive isotopes which are identified by the mass numbers 238U (99.27% by mass), 235U (0.72%) and 234U (0.0054%). On average, approximately 90 µg (micrograms) of uranium exists in the human body from normal intakes of water, food and air. About 66% is found in the skeleton, 16% in the liver, 8% in the kidneys and 10% in other tissues. Uranium is used primarily in nuclear power plants. However, most reactors require uranium in which the 235U content is enriched from 0.72% to about 1.5-3%. Depleted ...

Le syndrome de l'immunodéficience acquise, plus connu sous son acronyme SIDA ou sida[1], est le nom d'un ensemble de symptômes consécutifs à la destruction de plusieurs cellules du système immunitaire par un rétrovirus. Le sida est le dernier stade de l'infection par ce virus et finit par la mort de l'organisme infecté des suites de maladies opportunistes.
Il existe plusieurs rétrovirus responsables du sida, chacun infectant une espèce particulière [2]. Le plus connu d'entre eux est le virus de l'immunodéficience humaine (VIH) infectant l'Homme. Les autres virus sont, parmi d'autres, le VIS infectant les singes et le VIF pour le chat.
Depuis le début de la pandémie, trois modes de transmission ont été observés :
* par voie sexuelle : qui est le principal et dont la meilleure protection est le préservatif
* par voie sanguine : qui concerne particulièrement les utilisateurs de drogues injectables, les hémophiles, les transfusés et les professionnels de la santé
* de la mère à l'enfant : qui peut survenir in utero dans les dernières semaines de la grossesse, au moment de l'accouchement et de l'allaitement
Il n'existe aucun vaccin permettant d'éradiquer le virus et les traitements antiviraux disponibles actuellement, bien qu'ayant une certaine efficacité, ne permettent aucune guérison à l'heure actuelle. Seule la prolifération du VIH au sein de l'organisme est ralentie, retardant ainsi la venue du stade "sida".
Cette situation privilégiée d'accès aux traitements ne concerne que les pays développés qui peuvent assurer la prise en charge financière de ces thérapeutiques. Dans les pays en développement, plus de 95 % des patients ne bénéficient aujourd'hui d'aucun traitement efficace. C'est pour cette raison que l'ONU à travers son programme ONUSIDA a fait de la lutte contre le sida une de ses priorités.

An absolutely terrific jazz-rock-funk-fusion-esque soundtrack from the masters of Italian horror soundtracks, Goblin. It's the soundtrack to an early eighties sci-fi/horror movie about alien eggs that spill goo causing people to explode. Nice. Also contains some tracks from Buio Omega as these were used as a temporary score for the director (Luigi Cozzi) who decided to leave them in the final movie. As you do.

I've often seen the warning signs around San Diego County beaches that appear immediately after rainfall warning visitors to stay out of the water due to runoff contamination, but this sign was a first for me. The yellow signs on the bottom warn of sewage contaminated water that may cause illness.
This particular beach is located within the Border Field State Park just south of the Tijuana river outlet and north of the Mexican Border. Where the sewage contamination comes from, I have no idea -- possibly from the river? At any rate, it's a shame that these huge stretches of beach south of Imperial Beach are completely unused except for a few curious visitors to the state park. Not to mention the harm that is likely being done to the animals inhabiting this area.

Fruit flies are horrible. Fruit flies are the worst! My apartment got infested in September, after I left a bag of nectarines sitting on the counter overnight. Since then, it's been war between me and them. I couldn't use bug spray or drain cleaner, because they would also kill my birds. A bowl of vinegar and soap, however, seems to be doing the trick.

The notion of us all carrying cocaine (ChEBI:27958) in our wallets, purses or packets may not be as outrageous or unlikely as we might think! In what researchers describe as the largest, most comprehensive analysis to date of cocaine contamination in banknotes, scientists are reporting that 95% of dollar bills in Washington DC bear traces of the illegal drug cocaine, with high levels also oberved in other big cities, such as Baltimore, Boston and Detroit [1]. Researchers at the University of Massachusetts in Dartmouth tested notes from more than 30 cities from five countries (United States, Canada, Brazil, China and Japan). "To my surprise, we're finding more and more cocaine in banknotes," said lead researcher Yuegang Zuo. He suggested the rise may be due to the economic downturn, "with stressed people turning to cocaine". The U.S. and Canada were found to have the highest levels, with an average contamination rate of between 85 and 90 percent, while China and Japan had the lowest, between 12 and 20 percent contamination [1]. In the U.S. the cleanest bills were collected from Salt Lake City, home of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, better known as the Mormons [1].Scientists have known for years that paper money can become contaminated with cocaine during drug deals and directly via snorting cocaine through rolled bills. Large-scale contamination is thought to take place when the notes are stacked together in currency-counting machines. In the new study, Zuo and colleagues used a modified form of a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer for their measurements [2]. This allowed a faster, simpler and more accurate measurement of cocaine contamination than other methods, without destroying the currency. Amounts found in the 234 U.S. banknotes analysed ranged from .006 micrograms (thousands of times smaller than a single grain of sand) to over 1,240 micrograms of cocaine, or the equivalent of about 50 grains of sand, per bill. Zuo downplayed any health or legal concerns linked to the handling of contaminated notes. "For the most part, you can't get high by sniffing a regular banknote, unless it was used directly in drug uptake or during a drug exchange", Zuo said. "It also won't affect your health and is unlikely to interfere with blood and urine tests used for drug detection". The study, Zuo said, could help increase public awareness of cocaine use and help curb its abuse by assisting law enforcement agencies and forensic specialists to identify how the drug is used in a given community.

Working with supplied air. The removeable coating on the crane was applied too thin and could not be effectively removed. It didn't really matter since the engine was internally contaminated and could never get unrestricted free release. The crane was cut up and packed in B-25's boxs and a 20 foot sealand container for burial. The contaminated aerial lift was sent to Hake in Memphis to be used in a contamination area. The tent structure also ended up at Hake and was still in storage there five years later.

I tried hard to capture what was easy to see with the eyes, but all I got was this. The plate on the bottom is contaminated, if you look hard enough you can see that the media is slightly orange-y which is a sign of contamination. Fungus contamination changes the pH of the cell media and there is a indicator included in it that changes colour to indicate contamination.

The old Remco Hydraulics plant at 934 S. Main St. on the west side of Highway 101 (S. Main St.) across from Safeway. The Willits Arch and Skunk Train tracks are just to the left of this photo.
These buildings were originally the Harrah Brothers Machine Works, which built sawmill equipment. Eventually they came to specialize in making hydraulic cylinders and the name was changed to Remco. In the early 1960s, the company began doing chrome plating of its cylinders, and then expanded to do plating of other sorts.
Toxic materials used in the plating process were stored in large underground tanks (that were below the water table), and waste solutions were discharged into the nearby Baechtel Creek.
Remco was owned by several corporations over the years, and the plant finally closed in 1995. It remains vacant awaiting final remediation of the toxic contamination.
