God’s Hazardous Waste Experts

Job 12:7-8 "But now ask the beasts, and they will teach you; and the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you; and the fish of the sea will explain to you." The environment naturally produces hazardous waste without human help. Ashes from a wood fire can contain enough naturally occurring radioactivity to merit a hazardous waste classification. Uranium and other radioactive elements occur naturally in the environment and can be dissolved in ground water. Chloro fluorocarbons, manufactured for refrigeration, are also spewed from volcanoes. Also called CFCs, these chemicals are thought by some scientists to degrade the Earth's ozone layer. The fact is, nature produces more hazardous waste than man does. Since hazardous waste is a natural part of the creation, one might expect a well designed creation to have the ability to process hazardous materials into harmless substances. Science is beginning to discover how the Creator has designed the creation to deal with this problem. Scientists have learned how several bacteria decontaminate water that carries dissolved uranium. One species of bacterium combines the phosphate in the water with the uranium to make uranium phosphate crystals. These crystals are stored harmlessly in the bacterium. Another species uses enzymes to make uranium ore that then settles harmlessly out of the water. Another species has been discovered that breaks down CFCs. The creation is indeed well designed. In ...

Burning hazardous waste at the BEIL – Drum flying out

Exclusive: Down To Earth correspondent and citizen-village journalist file picture of the devastating file of burning hazardous waste at the Bharuch Enviro Infrastructure Limited (BEIL). Over 150 tonnes of extremely hazardous waste went up in smoke, which carried toxins to the villages around and is bound to pollute the land and water bodies for a long time to come. The pesticide manufacturer, United Phosphorus Limited (UPL) holds major equity in the this hazardous waste disposal site, which is bidding to get the toxic waste of the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal for disposal. Nobody has been able to explain how this fire occurred; why massive quantities -- reportedly over 9000 tonnes of hazardous waste -- were stored in a facility which has a capacity of only 50 tonnes each day; or why adequate precautions were not taken for a Bhopal-type situation not to happen. It is only fortunate, say local villagers that the wind direction changed and the majority of toxins were carried to lands not inhabited by people. Otherwise, another Bhopal or worse was inevitable. The Gujarat Pollution Control Board now has the task of managing this clean up and to take the errant company to task. Watch this space for an update. Read Down To Earth (downtoearth.org.in for our reportage on the hazardous waste dump fire.

Hazardous Waste Cleanup 1994 USEPA

On December 11, 1980, Congress passed the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA , more commonly known as Superfund). This important legislation was enacted to fill a major gap in environmental protection. The events at Love Canal, New York, and other sites around the country had shown that wastes buried long ago -- and mostly forgotten -- could prove to be a serious threat to the community. Working together with States, Tribes, communities, local governments, and many other stakeholders, Superfund has produced impressive results. On its 20th anniversary, Superfund can point to many accomplishments, including: over 6400 actions to immediately reduce threats to public health and environment; 757 Superfund sites with all cleanup construction completed; cleanup work done by responsible parties at over 70 percent of the sites placed on the list of national priorities; and private parties settlements at a value of over billion. While Superfund's accomplishments are impressive, challenges remain. Abandoned waste sites are still being discovered. EPA continues to work with its partners to address immediate, or long-term, dangers -- and ensure that the remedies selected remain effective for years to come. For information on innovative remediation methods, go to the EPA Technology Innovation Program (TIP), which advocates for more effective, less costly approaches (ie "smarter solutions") by government and industry to assess and clean up ...

Hazardous Waste Removal on Steep Slopes 1998 USEPA

During the 1990s, an illegal waste dump was discovered on three acres of steeply sloping land of the Yurok Native American tribe. Tribal, state, and federal agencies formed an alliance to identify the waste, separate the hazardous from the non-hazardous wastes, and excavate the waste material for transport and safe disposal. Two bulldozers tethered together used a yo-yo maneuver to excavate a two-foot layer of waste on the steep slope. Yurok tribe members were employed to assist in the cleanup, and tribal council members monitored operations. The partnership between the agencies proved effective in managing costs and sharing technological capabilities. The tribe implemented a waste transfer station, started an education program, and stepped up its enforcement of dumping regulations. Erosion control measures were implemented on the slope, and native plants were re-seeded to establish a vegetation cover. The Yurok Native American tribe live in northern California on land that has been their home for hundreds of years. The Klamath River runs through the mountains and forests they call home, providing the Yurok with fish, a source of religious tradition, and spiritual wellbeing. This clip is from the 1998 USEPA video, Yurok Illegal Dump Site.

Please see a photo I took on 30 January 2009 and posted on Flickr. It shows Sperling Road N17. (I was walking past on my way to the Post Office in Moorefield Road.)

With wheeled bins, pavement parking and some dumping, it was a tight squeeze for pedestrians to get through. Probably hazardous for some people with physical disabilities; and - I'd guess - impassable for someone in a wheelchair.

Could I please ask that an officer from Waste Management takes a look; checks if this is a regular problem; and comes up with possible solutions?

Dear Cllr Stanton

Thank you for your email.

The Contract Monitoring Officer carried out a site inspection at Sperling Road in order to ascertain which properties are placing wheel bins out on the pavement. At the time of inspection there were no bins found out on the pavement and all properties have sufficient space for housing a wheel bin on their premises. The officer will re-visit the location in order to see if any properties are leaving their bins out and should any property be found where a bin has been left on the pavement a letter will be delivered informing of the correct procedure for refuse disposal.

In regards to pavement parking, currently there are no lines and signs to enforce at this location. However, we are liaising with Sustainable Transport in order to ascertain whether or not we can implement these lines and signs. We can then begin enforcing footway parking when necessary. Once we obtain feedback from them we will update you accordingly.

The enforcement team has visited location and checked addresses given. At side of number two, no dumped refuse found apart from some wind blown litter. Side of number one there were some suitcases. These items were behind a locked gate which accesses unadopted land at the rear of properties in Moorefield Road. As the land is unadopted we cannot serve notice, will request that waste management arrange clearance.

We found black bags on opposite sides of Sperling Road. All bags were searched but no evidence was found. (We contacted Accord to clear. Reference number 406899.)

I do trust this information is of assistance.
