Bangalore-Treating kitchen waste water for reuse
Waste water emerging from the kitchen sink has high organic material from the food dishes as well as oil and grease from typical Indian cooking. This water can be treated with a simple oil and grease trap and a planted filter for reuse as garden water. Approximately 30 litres of water per person per day is use up in doing the dishes in a typical Indian home. The first thing to do is to trap the oil and grease which can be taken out occasionally and put into a compost heap. The food material is also allowed to settle down and separated from the rest of the water. This remaining water is oxygenated using a small aquarium bubbler. This cost Rs 250/- and is obviously a Chinese make. It also consumes less than a half unit of energy every day. About 100 litres to 120 litres of water can be treated and used to water the pots and the garden. If any water is in excess it can be used to recharge the ground through a small recharge well.

God’s Hazardous Waste Experts
Job 12:7-8 "But now ask the beasts, and they will teach you; and the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you; and the fish of the sea will explain to you." The environment naturally produces hazardous waste without human help. Ashes from a wood fire can contain enough naturally occurring radioactivity to merit a hazardous waste classification. Uranium and other radioactive elements occur naturally in the environment and can be dissolved in ground water. Chloro fluorocarbons, manufactured for refrigeration, are also spewed from volcanoes. Also called CFCs, these chemicals are thought by some scientists to degrade the Earth's ozone layer. The fact is, nature produces more hazardous waste than man does. Since hazardous waste is a natural part of the creation, one might expect a well designed creation to have the ability to process hazardous materials into harmless substances. Science is beginning to discover how the Creator has designed the creation to deal with this problem. Scientists have learned how several bacteria decontaminate water that carries dissolved uranium. One species of bacterium combines the phosphate in the water with the uranium to make uranium phosphate crystals. These crystals are stored harmlessly in the bacterium. Another species uses enzymes to make uranium ore that then settles harmlessly out of the water. Another species has been discovered that breaks down CFCs. The creation is indeed well designed. In ...

DigInfo - movie.diginfo.tv There are numerous wastewater treatment methods that use chemicals to purify contaminated water, but these chemicals have the potential to negatively impact living organisms, humans, and the environment. Researchers at Tokyo Kasei University have developed a wastewater treatment system that uses microorganisms found in nature to effectively purify contaminated water without consuming energy or negatively impacting the environment. This wastewater treatment system features high purification efficiency. The system combines an anaerobic bioreactor with an aerobic bioreactor. The anaerobic and aerobic microorganisms are immobilized in the recycled foam glass waste containers of the respective bioreactors. The microorganisms are immobilized both on the surface and inside the foam glass, and when the wastewater comes into contact with the foam glass the microorganisms act to separate the contaminants from the water to purify it. This is a cost-effective, chemical free wastewater treatment system that has a wide range of potential applications to include rivers, lakes, marshes, ponds as well as domestic wastewater.

Hazardous Waste Cleanup 1994 USEPA
On December 11, 1980, Congress passed the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA , more commonly known as Superfund). This important legislation was enacted to fill a major gap in environmental protection. The events at Love Canal, New York, and other sites around the country had shown that wastes buried long ago -- and mostly forgotten -- could prove to be a serious threat to the community. Working together with States, Tribes, communities, local governments, and many other stakeholders, Superfund has produced impressive results. On its 20th anniversary, Superfund can point to many accomplishments, including: over 6400 actions to immediately reduce threats to public health and environment; 757 Superfund sites with all cleanup construction completed; cleanup work done by responsible parties at over 70 percent of the sites placed on the list of national priorities; and private parties settlements at a value of over billion. While Superfund's accomplishments are impressive, challenges remain. Abandoned waste sites are still being discovered. EPA continues to work with its partners to address immediate, or long-term, dangers -- and ensure that the remedies selected remain effective for years to come. For information on innovative remediation methods, go to the EPA Technology Innovation Program (TIP), which advocates for more effective, less costly approaches (ie "smarter solutions") by government and industry to assess and clean up ...

Hazardous Waste Removal on Steep Slopes 1998 USEPA
During the 1990s, an illegal waste dump was discovered on three acres of steeply sloping land of the Yurok Native American tribe. Tribal, state, and federal agencies formed an alliance to identify the waste, separate the hazardous from the non-hazardous wastes, and excavate the waste material for transport and safe disposal. Two bulldozers tethered together used a yo-yo maneuver to excavate a two-foot layer of waste on the steep slope. Yurok tribe members were employed to assist in the cleanup, and tribal council members monitored operations. The partnership between the agencies proved effective in managing costs and sharing technological capabilities. The tribe implemented a waste transfer station, started an education program, and stepped up its enforcement of dumping regulations. Erosion control measures were implemented on the slope, and native plants were re-seeded to establish a vegetation cover. The Yurok Native American tribe live in northern California on land that has been their home for hundreds of years. The Klamath River runs through the mountains and forests they call home, providing the Yurok with fish, a source of religious tradition, and spiritual wellbeing. This clip is from the 1998 USEPA video, Yurok Illegal Dump Site.

Titusville Solid Waste (in action) Lodal ASL 8402 7-10-09
For pictures of this truck please click the following link to Flickr: www.flickr.com This is a City of Titusville, Florida, Department of Public Works, Solid Waste, Lodal automated side loader number 8402 . I must say, this driver was one of the friendliest I've ever met! He said that he really likes driving automated and let me film his truck collecting a few stops. He even let me film a shot of the hopper. During the hopper shot, he was trying to explain to me that the packer will not move unless the arm is in motion. I guess this is a safety feature on this truck to prevent a driver from getting injured if they need to pull a cart or other object from the hopper. UPDATE: I found the driver again today (7-31-09), and asked him about the panel at 3:39, I think he called it a "sweeper panel." On the Lodal, this panel is there to keep material in the body when the packer is all the way to the rear of the truck, so that nothing falls behind the blade (not sure if you know, but the Lodal packer is like a large brick). This panel swings back and forth swinging up when the packer hits it and the panel rides along the top of the packer as a shield to aid during dumping or extra packing. This is the first Lodal ASL I've ever seen in person. I took a few pictures of the driver so that he could get them from Flickr at his convenience. Big THANK YOU to the driver on this one! I hope you can find the video and pics! Statistics & Data: Honors for this video (4) #75 - Top Favorited (7 ...
